Yvonne Staples, Background Singer and Manager of the Staple Singers, Dies 80

The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul and R&B singing group. Roebuck “Pops” Staples (1914–2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha (1934–2013), Pervis (b. 1935), and Mavis (b. 1939). Yvonne (1937–2018) replaced her brother when he was drafted into the U.S. Army, and again in 1970. They are best known for their 1970s hits “Respect Yourself”, “I’ll Take You There”, “If You’re Ready (Come Go with Me)”, and “Let’s Do It Again”, which with one exception (“I’ll Take You There”) peaked on the Hot 100 within a week from Christmas Day. While the family name is Staples, the group used “Staple” commercially.

Yvonne Staples died on April 10, 2018. Cause of death was colon cancer (diagnosed weeks earlier).

In 1999, The Staple Singers was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Pops Staples died of complications from a concussion suffered in December 2000. In 2005, the group was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Cleotha Staples died in Chicago on February 21, 2013, after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for over a decade.

Isao Takahata, Japanese Animation director, Dies 82

Isao Takahata (October 29, 1935 – April 5, 2018) was a Japanese film director, screenwriter and producer. Takahata was the co-founder of Studio Ghibli along with long-time collaborative partner Hayao Miyazaki. Takahata earned critical international acclaim for his work as a director of anime films, which included the war-themed Grave of the Fireflies, the drama Only Yesterday, the ecological adventure Pom Poko, and the comedy My Neighbors the Yamadas. Takahata’s last film was The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, which was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Animated Feature Film at the 87th Academy Awards.

Takahata had been diagnosed with lung cancer, and died on April 5, 2018, at a hospital in Tokyo at the age of 82.

Cecil Taylor, The Avant-Garde Jazz Pianist, Dies 89

Cecil Percival Taylor (March 25, 1929 – April 5, 2018) was an American pianist and poet. Classically trained, Taylor is generally acknowledged as having been one of the pioneers of free jazz. His music is characterized by an extremely energetic, physical approach, producing complex improvised sounds, frequently involving tone clusters and intricate polyrhythms. His piano technique has been likened to percussion, for example described as “eighty-eight tuned drums” (referring to the number of keys on a standard piano). He has also been described as “like Art Tatum with contemporary-classical leanings”.

Taylor moved to Fort Greene, Brooklyn, in 1983. He died at his Brooklyn residence on April 5, 2018, at the age of 89. Cause of death is not known.

Susan Anspach, actress in ‘Five Easy Pieces’ dies 75

Susan Florence Anspach (November 23, 1942 – April 2, 2018) was an American stage, film and television actress, who was best known for her roles in films during the 1970s such as Five Easy Pieces (1970), Play It Again, Sam (1972), Blume in Love (1973), and during the 1980s such as Montenegro.

Anspach died of heart disease on April 2, 2018, aged 75, in Los Angeles, California.

Stéphane Audran, Star in Oscar-Winning ‘Babette’s Feast,’ Dies 85

Stéphane Audran (born Colette Suzanne Dacheville; 8 November 1932 – 27 March 2018) was a French film and television actress, known for her performances in award-winning movies such as The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) and Babette’s Feast (1987) and in critically acclaimed films like The Big Red One (1980) and Violette Nozière (1978).

Her son Thomas told the AFP news agency that his mother had died early on 27 March 2018, following a long illness, saying: “She had been in hospital for 10 days and she had returned home. She died peacefully at around 2 am.”

Stephen Hawking, renowned scientist, dies 76

Stephen William Hawking CH CBE FRS FRSA (8 January 1942 – 14 March 2018) was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author, and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. His scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.

Hawking had a rare early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis “ALS” or Lou Gehrig’s disease) that gradually paralysed him over the decades. Even after the loss of his speech, he was still able to communicate through a speech-generating device, initially through use of a hand-held switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle. He died on 14 March 2018 at the age of 76.

Hawking died in his home in Cambridge, England, early in the morning of 14 March 2018, at the age of 76. His family stated that he “died peacefully”.

Hawking was born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo’s death and died on the 139th anniversary of Einstein’s birth; the latter of which coincided with Pi day. Hawking’s private funeral took place at 2pm on the afternoon of 31 March 2018, the 291st anniversary of Newton’s passing, at Great St Mary’s Church, Cambridge.

Count Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy (20 February 1927 – 10 March 2018) was a French fashion designer who founded the house of Givenchy in 1952. He was famous for having designed much of the personal and professional wardrobe of Audrey Hepburn and clothing for Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. He was named to the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1970. His partner was Philippe Venet.

Hubert de Givenchy died in his sleep at the Renaissance chateau near Paris on Saturday 10 March 2018.  He was 91.  He died in his sleep and cause of death is unknown.

Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan dies 46

Dolores Mary Eileen O’Riordan (6 September 1971 – 15 January 2018) was an Irish musician and singer-songwriter. She led the rock band the Cranberries for 13 years before the band took a break starting in 2003, reuniting in 2009.

In 1990 O’Riordan auditioned for and won the role of lead singer for a band called The Cranberry Saw Us (later changed to The Cranberries). The band released five albums: Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? (1993), No Need to Argue (1994), To the Faithful Departed (1996), Bury the Hatchet (1999) and Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (2001) and a greatest-hits compilation entitled Stars: The Best of 1992–2002 (2002), before they went on hiatus in 2003.

On 15 January 2018, at the age of 46, while in London for a recording session, O’Riordan died unexpectedly at a hotel. The cause of death has not yet been made public, although police said it was not being treated as suspicious.

Chuck Berry, Rock ‘n’ Roll Pioneer, Dies 90

Charles Edward Anderson “Chuck” Berry (October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter and one of the pioneers of rock and roll music. With songs such as “Maybellene” (1955), “Roll Over Beethoven” (1956), “Rock and Roll Music” (1957) and “Johnny B. Goode” (1958), Berry refined and developed rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive. Writing lyrics that focused on teen life and consumerism, and developing a music style that included guitar solos and showmanship, Berry was a major influence on subsequent rock music.

Police in St. Charles County, Missouri, were called to Berry’s house on March 18, 2017, where he was found unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene, aged 90.
