5 Most Shocking Deaths that I Remember

Below is my 5 most shocking deaths that I remember.

These are the ones that I personally remember (for now)

* I remember Elvis & John Lennon's Deaths, but I was not "shocked" at that time (I was sad).

Re: 5 Most Shocking Deaths that I Remember

sorry doesnt count... michael jackson is definatly one of them

Re: 5 Most Shocking Deaths that I Remember

I just found out about him. I don't know if I should thank you or... That's a horrifying video. I don't know why I didn't hear that news when it happened. Maybe that was the time I didn't watch news? Maybe news stations in my area down-played that news that I no longer remember that event. (or combination of both) Really shocking... I'm still sick to my stomach.

Re: 5 Most Shocking Deaths that I Remember

There are a lot of people that I have seen die that made me sad, but if these are the ones that will be long remembered, and since I have to exclude those that I was too young to have been effected by, then my list would be: 1. 9/11 - I was in a hotel room getting dressed for work. I turned on CNN, as was my morning routine and the first plane had hit. There was still a lot of speculation as to what was going on. The first opinion that I remember hearing was that it was an aviation accident. How wrong that opinion proved to be. 2. Lady Diana - I was at work when this happened. If you notice by the rest of my list, I've not focused on any other single death. This one, however, was particularly shocking as it seemed to implicate the Royal Family. In my mind, they are guilty of her murder, and got away only because of their position as the Monarchy of England. Of course, then we have the Kennedys... 3. Those who died during Hurricane Katrina - I watched in horror as thousands of people perished. Like 9/11, this could have been prevented. The US Army Corps of Engineers KNEW that the levees were flawed, and that their breach was imminent. There should have not been a soul left between the TX / LA state line and Mobile Alabama. Mandatory evacuations should have been enforced. They had enough time. 4. The 250,000+ who died during the Tsunami of 24December2004. The sheer magnitude of this was simply overwhelming. This event was truly sad in that, unlike hurricanes, there was no warning of the massive quake. To me, this is the saddest event of our time. 5. The Space Shuttle Challenger Crew- My teacher was in the running to be on board. My deepest sympathy goes out to the families of those involved (The family of Christa McAuliffe in particular) but we were very glad that our teacher did not win. Although this doesn't rank up with the 9/11, Katrina, or the Tsunami, it was a very personal loss.

1) Marvin Gaye 2) Roger (of R&B group Zapp) killed by his own brother, who then committed suicide) WHY?????.....no one will ever know 3) David Ruffin one of the greatest of the Temptations 4) Michael Jackson 5) Estelle Bennett of 60's girl group the Ronettes (died broke & alone after suffering years of mental illness and homelessness after Phil Spector married her sister, Ronnie & forced the group to break up). Sweet, gentle Estelle was content to live in the shadow of her younger sister, Ronnie, but was known as "the prettiest Ronette". In her heyday, Estelle was pursued by the likes of Mick Jagger, George Harrison, John Lennon, Johnny Mathis & George Hamilton. Al Pacino will play crazy Phil Spector in an upcoming HBO movie....hoping they will give the Ronettes the respect they deserve in telling the BIG part they played in Phil Spector's life story.

Re: 5 Most Shocking Deaths that I Remember

How, how many I remember, JFK ... I was 7 years old & remember my mother sobbing as if my father had died. Martin Luther King I remember all too well as I live in Memphis & it was not only a sad time but a very dangerous & scary one also. RFK .. should have seen that one coming but perhaps was not old enough or wise enough. John Lennon ... I was ironing my uniform when the radio brought me that news ... I called in sick for that shift. Freddie Mercury ... such a great loss to the music world. The saddest is that I could go on almost forever it seems. The 911 attack ... saw the second plane crash as I watched The Today Show, lest we not forget the victims of Oklahoma City Bombing(I went to see the memmoral in 2006 ... it took my breath away), saw the shuttle blowup on TV, school shootings thoughout out nation, ramdom acts of violence almost constantly thrown in your face on the news. Generally sad generation I am a part of. Sincerely, Stitches aka Mary S.

Re: 5 Most Shocking Deaths that I Remember

Dating myself, here. My list would definitely be different if I'd been born a decade earlier when between the Kennedy's, MLK, Marilyn Monroe, Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin, Jim Morrison, and other larger-than-life celebs passed this world. 1. John Lennon (coinciding with the release of Double Fantasy - just at the height of his solo career, back on his feet, and finally settled in life. I was hanging out at home when they broke into a baseball game with the announcement. A huge Beatle fan, I knew one of the unfortunate consequences. Still plan to visit Strawberry Fields in NYC) 2. Elvis Presley (the King - even though he wasn't in his prime, we just never expected he'd be gone so soon. I was at home trying on a new dress.) 3. Princess Diana (admired the world over and seemed almost too important and protected to die; another finally happy soul - for a little while anyway). 4. Karen Carpenter (darling of 70s pop; revealing the new and insideous epidemic of anorexia nervosa: body image gone wrong, ironically spurned on by the media itself) 5. Stevie Ray Vaughan (another one who had just straightened his drug- and alocohol-filled life out; saw him perform a week or two before where he spoke about it to the audience; woke up to a SRV marathon on the radio with the sad announcement between songs. Cried all day.) I was saddened by many more, but so many were rather expected, either by their age or conditions.

Re: 5 Most Shocking Deaths that I Remember

John Lennon was killed 7-Dec-1980, so it was a Monday Night NFL Game that was interrupted. Howard Cosell made the initial announcement to millions of U.S Beatle Fans by reporting he was "shot". The 3,000+ that perished has to be the most shocking to me since I was watching a live telecast when the 2nd plane hit. We all knew than and there that it was a murderous act. J.F.K has to be highly rated by anyone over the age of 4 on 22-Nov-63. I was in High School in Florida, and we were immediately sent home wondering if missiles would be incoming soon. The deaths of George Harrison, Sam Kinneson and Dan Fogleberg hit me hard...along with the loss of Dan Seals. You kinda expect it when rock stars live in the fast lane, but illness & assassination are really 'shockers'.

Re: 5 Most Shocking Deaths that I Remember

John Lennon died on December 8, 1980...look it up anywhere.

Re: 5 Most Shocking Deaths that I Remember

They were playing a baseball game in early December? Perhaps you live in a warmer climate.
