Re: First Lady of Star Trek Majel Roddenberry dies 76

Interesting. I didn't know she was nurse Chapel or "Number One" in the first show. I never thought of Gene Roddenberry as still married upon his death because of the affair I heard he had with Nichelle Nichols (Uhura). I'm not sure if it's true, but I also understand that the role of Captain Kirk was given to Jeffrey Hunter. Upon his untimely death, the role went to William Shatner. Anybody know?

Jeffrey HunterI didn't realize that Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) died so soon.   He looks healthy and thin in the picture.  We never know when your time will be up.

Jeffrey Hunter (November 25, 1926 – May 27, 1969).  died 42, of stroke.

Death
He married actress Emily McLaughlin in February, 1969. Less than three months later, while flying back to the U.S. from Spain after filming Viva America!, he suffered the signs of a stroke. After recovering at a hospital in Los Angeles, he suffered another stroke while at home, causing a fall and a skull fracture, ultimately resulting in cerebral hemorrhage. He died the following day from his injuries and was interred in the Glen Haven Memorial Park cemetery, in Sylmar, California.

I am going to Granada Hills (CA), to my parents' house for Christmas dinner.  Sylmar is about 5 minutes away.  Small world.

This is what I found (from Wiki): Jeffrey Hunter NBC offered him the lead role of Captain Christopher Pike in "The Cage", the pilot episode of a new science fiction series, Star Trek. Hunter, decided to concentrate on motion pictures such as Brainstorm, and declined to film a second Star Trek pilot requested by NBC in 1965, and so the lead in the series was made a different character, James T. Kirk, which was given to William Shatner. Later that year, Hunter was filming the pilot for yet another NBC series, the espionage thriller Journey Into Fear, which the network failed to pick up. --------------------------- Gene Roddenberry Roddenberry married twice and had three children. He was married to Eileen Rexroat for 27 years. They had two daughters, Darlene (1947-1995) and Dawn (1953-). He had an extra-marital affair with actress Nichelle Nichols during the early to mid 1960s, and began an affair in the late 1960s with actress Majel Barrett (1932-2008) whom he cast in various roles in Star Trek. He was divorced from Eileen Rexroat and married Barrett in Japan in a traditional Shinto ceremony on August 6, 1969. Together they had one child, his only son, Eugene Wesley, Jr.
